Scaffolding Instruction and Assessment to Reach ALL Learners
About this Session
Instead of following a linear progression to teach grade-level concepts, this session focuses on designing instruction and assessments that progressively broaden understanding. The approach involves commencing with fundamental concepts and systematically elevating the level of difficulty, complexity, and abstraction. By incorporating prerequisite skills and incrementally increasing cognitive demands, this method accommodates diverse learners, enabling them to engage with the content at their individual proficiency levels.
This instructional strategy is mirrored in the assessment process, employing a four-point scale such as Beginning/Developing/Meeting/Excelling. Assessment questions are crafted to evaluate each developmental stage, offering students insights into their current proficiency, identifying strengths, and highlighting areas for improvement in order to advance to the next level of learning. This inclusive approach caters to the needs of all learners, irrespective of their starting points.
