Using the Power of Modeling: Supporting Learners and Enhancing Formative Assessment
About this Session
Modeling can seem like an obvious strategy to use but is often overlooked when developing a strategic plan. This strategy of modeling has direct and indirect components that, when done with intention, can make the difference between success and frustration to a learner, especially in a new situation or when presented with a new skill. Modeling can be an important part of your formative assessment practice to help your planning and timelines.

Unlocking Social Narratives: Empowering Students with Social Stories and Power Cards for Enhanced Formative Assessment and More
This session outlines the key details when choosing to implement either a social story or a power card. Both have individual benefits and can support a student when looking to understand a social situation or approach a new situation (and more). Most people only know about the social story so this is often very helpful when wanting to implement something like this for older students (grades 5 and up). In terms of assessment, this can be a powerful tool to use within your formative assessment practices to move your students’ understanding forward.

Mastering Mindful Prompting for Successful Formative Assessment and More
Proper implementation of prompting can be key in the overall trajectory of a learner’s experience. Research shows we need to be more aware of the level of prompting. We will show how the level of prompting directly corresponds to your formative and summative assessment plans as student achievement will help determine prompting levels. This one element alone can be the difference between moving forward and stagnation in learning.

Antecedent-based Interventions: Setting the Stage for Success
This strategy can be the most powerful of all as it requires one to think proactively versus reactively when planning a learner’s day or schedule. There are many elements that can be put into place to ensure the learner is successful/regulated/engaged in an activity. Sometimes the best defense is a good offense – even in this regard. Shelly outlines six research-based strategies to implement before an issue occurs and highlights the role of assessment in each one. Assessment is an important part of your planning by helping to set the stage for success!
