How will we engage students in their learning?
The principles of engaging students in assessment reach beyond making it enjoyable. While enjoyment has value, assessment must be meaningful. This means aligning it with curricular outcomes and involving students directly in the learning process. Fisher, Frey, and Hattie (2021) observe that engagement is often gauged through visible student behaviour, essentially, whether students are completing tasks. However, deep learning requires moving beyond compliance.
Our goal is for students to invest in and drive their own learning, becoming independent learners who communicate, collaborate, manage information, and think critically, creatively, and globally to solve real-world problems, demonstrating true student agency. Student agency can be intentionally developed through four key elements: passion, purpose, focus, and choice.
