Leading Assessment Change
Resources to Support Your Leadership of Assessment Change
Essential conditions for successful implementation of your Assessment PD Plan
Leading any change initiative is a complex task. There are so many conditions to consider that it can be quite overwhelming when first starting out. The Guide to Support Implementation: Essential Conditions (essentialconditions.ca) is a popular tool that helps to simplify the planning process. Leaders can be confident that they have designed a change initiative as efficiently and effectively as possible.
To help instructional leadership teams design assessment-focused professional learning, AAC has adapted the essential conditions guide.

Creating a Positive Assessment Culture
Assessment is a critical aspect of education, but it’s often misunderstood by those involved in the education system. There are several common misunderstandings,
- such as confusion about the different types of assessments and their purposes
- misconceptions about fair assessment principles.
As a result, leaders in education must recognize these issues and take action to address them. The Alberta Assessment Consortium (AAC) suggests seeking guidance from experts, such as the author of the best-selling book “Creating Cultures of Thinking: 8 Forces We Must Master to Truly Transform Our Schools,” Ron Ritchhart. This book offers a clear framework for changing school and classroom culture.
AAC has adapted the 8 cultural forces to specifically target the goal of creating a positive assessment culture. By implementing this framework, education leaders can help create a culture where assessment is viewed as an opportunity for growth and improvement, rather than a source of stress and confusion.
