Creating a Positive Assessment Culture
The concept of assessment is often misunderstood in the education system and by the stakeholders connected with it. Whether it’s a misunderstanding of the types of assessment, the purpose of each type or misconceptions of the principles of fair assessment, leaders need to recognize these issues and address them. AAC recommends turning to the experts for guidance. The best-selling book “Creating Cultures of Thinking: 8 Forces We Must Master to Truly Transform Our Schools,” authored by Ron Ritchhart, has provided a clear framework for changing our school and classroom culture. AAC has adapted the 8 cultural forces to suit the goal of creating a positive assessment culture.
Providing Deep Professional Learning Plans
Modelling the use of the AAC Key Visual is a great way to assist teachers in the assessment planning process. AAC has adapted the AAC KEY VISUAL tool to support instructional leaders who are designing a professional learning program. Just like teachers, instructional leaders need to plan professional learning with the end in mind, provide multiple opportunities for teachers to engage in the feedback and practice formative assessment cycle, and use the data collected from the teacher’s learning process to inform the next steps in professional development.
